It's all eyes on the Bay when speeding dragon boats take to the water for the 19th Annual Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival on Treasure Island! Come cheer on the fleet of colorful 40-foot dragon boats as they race to the beat of Chinese drums on Saturday & Sunday, September 20 & 21, 2014.
This two-day, admission-free festival brings a weekend of world-class dragon boat racing, spectacular cultural performances, delicious food, a variety of clothes and crafts vendors, and kid-friendly activities in Dragon Land where games, arts and crafts, and rides await.
At the heart of the festival is the race excitement, with over 120 dragon boat teams comprised of nearly 3,000 paddlers representing teams that include local corporations and non-profits as well as competitive teams from across the U.S. and Canada. Come watch your favorite local corporations and community groups battle it out on the water.
Don’t miss the Opening Ceremony on Saturday at 11:30 am, where monks will perform a traditional blessing and eye dotting ceremony to awaken the dragons for a weekend of racing, joined by City & County of San Francisco elected officials.
On stage, there will be lion and dragon dances, taiko drumming, Tahitian dancing, martial arts, musical theater, Chinese acrobats, and much more! At the Kaiser Permanente Health and Fitness Pavilion, try the bicycle spin art, get an airbrush dragon tattoo, take a break at the sunscreen bar, let your kids climb aboard a real dragon boat, or learn about the latest in health and wellness at the KP Innovation Exhibit.
We'll have lots of activities for the kiddos, including Dragon Land — a 3,500 square foot children's activity pavilion filled with arts and crafts, games, animal balloons, face painting, temporary tattoos, yo yo lessons, and the Flax Creative Arts Activity Area. Kids can also ride the mini helicopter or spinning dragon rides, climb in a pirate house, test their agility and strenght at the Spider Mountain obstacle course, play hula hoops or jump rope in the Classic Kids Play Area, or touch live reptiles with Tree Frog Treks. New this year is the interactive Microsoft Stores-sponsored Land of Smart Kids Area, featuring science, technology and math-oriented activities, fun with Surface Pro 3 tablet and Xbox One, and even coding!
When you get hungry, check out the food selection, including some of San Francisco's favorite food vendors such as Curry Up Now and Let’s Be Frank Organic Hot Dogs. You can also try delicious BBQ, savor Thai, Vietnamese, and Hawaiian food, and cool off with a smoothie, Boba tea, or organic frozen treats.
