Salem, OR – The World Beat Dragon Boat Races are now accepting registrations for the event on July 1, 2012. Dragon Boat Racing at the World Beat is a truly unique event as teams race as an integral part of the World Beat Festival, celebrating multicultural diversity in Oregon. The Festival attracts 30,000 visitors and has 125 cultural performances across the weekend, and over 60 nations and cultures. There is no fee for dragon boaters or their family and friends to enter the Festival itself.
 
The Dragon Boat Racing takes place over a 500m course on the Willamette River on Sunday July 1. Races start at 9am, and teams will race 2 heats and 1 final through the day. The races attract over 30 teams from the Pacific Northwest, with teams at all levels of experience taking to the water. The World Beat Festival has won many awards, including 2011 Best Performing Arts Festival in Oregon, 2008 Best Festival in Oregon, and 2006 Best Cultural Festival in Oregon. Dear Colleagues,
 
Please find attached Information Bulletin No.1 for the 8th Club Crew World Championships (8th CCWC) due to be held in Hong Kong from 4-8 July 2012.
 
Please note that in certain Competition Classes the number of crew members in a Standard Boat is likely to be restricted to 20 (18 paddlers - 8 in the Small Boat) depending on the water and weather conditions prevailing in Victoria Harbour during the Championships. Any such restrictions will be made on crew safety grounds by the Chief Official.
 
ALL CREWS are to be reminded that they must be sanctioned by their IDBF Member (in Countries or Territories where there is an IDBF Member) and that all entries received will be referred back to the IDBF Member concerned for ratification before a final entry will be excepted.
 
Also note that there may be a small Admin charge for this Championships and that any such charge will be confirmed in Info Bul 2.
 
A note is shown in the Info Bulletin but you are advised of the full competition regulation change for the 18-23s, which is as follows:-
 
CR 2.1.6 (2.2.1). 18-23s.. Races can be held for Mixed or Single gender crews or in Open Competition, as shown above, for competitors aged 18 to 23 inclusive, as at the 1st June in a given year. (Aug 11).
Up to four (4) Racers in a Standard Boat competition and 2 in a Small Boat competition, may be aged 16 but under 18 years old and two (2) and one (1) over 23 but under 26 as at the 1st June. (Aug 11). Note: By definition Drummers and Steerers are ‘Racers’

Hello PDBA Membership,

Ginny O'Hare, USDBF President, was admitted to the ER and subsequent surgery (on the eve of her wedding).  Please know that PDBA sent flowers last week to the hospital, which were acknowledged.  Many of you might have met Ginny personally as she came out in 2010 to the San Francisco Festival in September.  During that visit, a reception was held for Ginny to meet our Youth and College teams.  She was so impressed with the quality of the youth she met, that she was instrumental in encouraging and supporting our West Coast U23 Team USA effort.  For those of us who have had the opportunity to work closely with Ginny, we can attest to her dedication and positive contributions to expanding this sport in the US.

We wish Ginny a speedy recovery and good wishes toward a real wedding soon.  If you would like to send Ginny a card, please send them to:

As you may know this year's PDBA championship races will be held this October in San Diego on the weekend of October 22.  The race this year is the qualifier for the Crew Club World Championships (CCWC) to be held in Hong Kong in 2012.  The San Diego organizers are working on the grid for the race weekend and need to have an idea of how many teams plan to participate in the PDBA Champs.    Please CONFIRM your INTENTION to race and specify what divisions no later than Sunday July 17th.    This information is very important for the PDBA and the race organizers and is very much appreciated.

interstate transport for the boats.

The United States Dragon Boat Federation and Daybreak Rotary Club of Fort Dodge, Iowa
invite you to attend the 8th USDBF U.S. Club Crew National Championships. The
Championships will be conducted within the highly respected Fort Dodge Badger Lake
Dragon Boat Bash. The event is for all club teams to compete in a National Championship.
We will be hosting all divisions and urge all teams to participate. The Championships will take
place at Badger Lake, Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge, Iowa on August 27 and 28, 2011. Teams
for the National Championship are expected to arrive in Fort Dodge by Friday, August 26,
2011. This will give your team time for registration, practice and allow you to attend the
opening Ceremonies in the evening. Teams should plan on two full days of racing on
Saturday and Sunday. Closing ceremonies and a celebration party will take place after the
racing on Sunday, so you will want to make your departure plans accordingly.
This event is being billed as the “
Gateway to Hong Kong” The winning crew for each

racing class will win a berth for the 2012 IDBF Club Crew World Championships to be held in
Hong Kong next year. While the BCS division will be competing for a National title, they will
not be vying for a berth at the IDBF Club Crew World Championships. The next International
Dragon Boat BCS festival is scheduled to be held in 2014. The International festival is open
to all BCS teams.

If you are 23 years old or younger before January 1, 2011 (U23), and have an interest in representing the USA as a part of the 2011 USDBF National Team, there will be a time trial  this weekend in San Diego.

If you are selected to be part of the U23 team, you will be representing the USA at the IDBF 10th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships, Tampa, Florida on August 3-7, 2011.  Please note that this is shortly after the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival to be held on July 30-31, 2011.

Les Hopper of San Diego Dragon Boat will be the head coach of this team.  Diane McCabe of the LA Racing Dragons will be assisting as well as yours truly (in a limited capacity).

The Southern California Time Trial will be held this Saturday, April 9th, 9:30 a.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m. at the San Diego Youth Aquatic Center, 1750 Fiesta Island Rd., San Diego, CA 92109.

The selection trial will consist of 3 components:
1) A team discussion
2) Physical time trial (OC paddling & land fitness benchmarks)
3) To be video taped paddling in a 20 person boat for technique assessment

Potential team members will be evaluated on many factors, including but not limited to, time trial, physical fitness, paddling technique, ability to blend with other paddlers in a dragon boat, and attitude.

Given the strength of school and college DB programs on the West Coast the selection and coaching committee is expecting a good showing from us!

The selectors are looking to form 1x Mixed, 1x Men's and 1x Women's squad from u23 paddlers across the country. Nominations are due Tuesday March 8th, 10pm.


What are the selectors looking for?
- Paddler who is age 18 to 23 on January 1st, 2011

- Any paddler who has the passion to compete at an international arena in dragon boating

- A paddler who has strong technical ability and solid level of fitness

- Paddler who is prepared to work hard and be disciplined to balance additional training with school and/ or work

- Someone who is able to fund and commit to traveling to Tampa for the World Championships (1x week, August 2nd to 8th)


Coaching and selection process
Les Hopper is Head Coach of the u23 squads. Les is based in San Diego & have been active in international dragon boating for 10+ years.  His bio is attached.
 
The selection process is comprised of a pre-selection (based on the Nomination Form & club coach endorsements), and fitness/ skill trials in person. Timeline and brief outline of process as follows;

As dragon boating is an amateur sport, paddlers are asked to contribute towards the cost of travelling to and competing at the World Championships. The below e-mail from Ginny O'Hare, President of the USDBF, and the attachment are being forwarded for your review and/or action. 

 To summarize;

  • In 2010, US Nationals (Chattanooga) was changed to a Club Crew event and is no longer a format for selecting US National Team coaches.
  • At the AGM in October it was decided to remove the conflict with Club Crew World Championships by moving US Nationals to odd years.
  • Rather than wait until 2013 for the next US Nationals it was determined to do a quick turn request for proposal for a 2011 US National Championship.
  • As mentioned below the site selection will occur by the end of January.

After reviewing the RFP document, if you are interested in hosting the US Nationals for 2011 in conjunction with your event please follow the instructions below for contacting the USDBF and attending the December 12, 2010, conference call. 

 

"Given the success of our 2010 USDBF 2010 Club Crew National Championships (CCNC) with a refocusing on a true Club Crew Event, the USDBF believes that to truly grow this event to include all USDBF Club Crews with minimal conflict, the event needs to move to odd years to take place during the off years from the IDBF Club Crew World Championships.  
During our AGM in October of this year, it was decided by the USDBF Board that we should not wait until 2013 to make this happen.  So for the initial switch we are looking to have USDBF Club Crew National Championships in 2011.  We are modifying our Request For Proposals (RFP) process to take into account the short time frame to make this happen.  This will be the only year we will do such a fast turn around for the event, from RFP to award to event actualization.  Because of this, we are placing a high priority on choosing an existing event with a strong history and proven success.
We realize that this time frame is not ideal, but after great discussion and feedback from various event organizers, we are confident that it is possible.   We want to let clubs know that this event is happening in 2011 so that they can add it to their racing schedule.  We will be awarding the site by the end of January so that details can be shared quickly.  We will then begin the RFP process for the 2013 USDBF CCNC shortly after this one is completed.  
The 2011 RFP is attached and will also be posted on our website, www.usdbf.org <http://www.usdbf.org> .  We will have a conference call on Dec. 12th to answer any questions that potential bidders may have.  Event organizers interested in having questions answered during this conference call should let us know by email to president@usdbf.org so that the call information can be provided to them.
The USDBF is excited about this change to odd years and we are looking forward to hosting Club Crew Nationals Championships again in 2011."

2010 regional highlights

  • Creation of a new website pdbausa.org. Website is active, about 80% complete. Our thanks to Kenny Kim from the LA Racing Dragons for his work on the site.

  • Broaden and enhance PDBA communication with our member paddlers and organizations. Formation of a broader e-mail list to distribute regional news. Our goal is to have two active addresses for each member club.

  • USDBF President Ginny O’Hare’s visit to the California Dragon Boat Association’s San Francisco race. The visit was a roaring success, highlighted by the beautiful reception provided by CDBA on Sunday. Ginny was very excited to experience the tremendous enthusiasm of the Bay Area crews, most especially the youth. PDBA wishes to thank the CDBA for hosting Ginny, and providing all of us with another great festival.

  • Increased attendance at the regional annual meeting in Seattle. Over 30 people attended our regional meeting this year. Thanks to our Seattle hosts for a great location, and awesome food.

  • AZDBA loses their lake! PDBA vice president Jean Quinsey reported the “bursting dam” incident that drained Tempe Towne Lake, home of the Arizona Dragon Boat Association. The lake is currently refilled and AZDBA teams are getting back on the water. The March AZDBA festival is still a “go”.

  • PDBA crews at Club Crew World Champs in Macau, China. Four of the five US crews at this summer’s CCWC champs on Macau hailed from the Pacific region. 3 crews from Wasabi Paddling Club in Portland, OR, and one youth crew from Bay Area Dragons Independence High school.

  • San Diego Dragon Boat Club hosted its first two day festival on October 23 & 24. This race débuted 10 man boat racing in our region. SDBA is bidding for the 2011 regional championships.

  • Growth in youth and U-23 programs in our region. College programs in California and Arizona are growing fast. San Francisco and Portland youth program coaches are working together to set up a youth racing series for the Pacific region. Their goal is to have a circuit of races that are easy for youth crews to attend, and provide a consistent level of crew attendance for competition.

Want to work on improving your dragon boat paddling skills?  Looking for quality coaching and an opportunity for individualized feedback on your technique?  Come participate in this training clinic where you will be able to refine your dragon boat technique with the USDBF National Team Head Coach, Bob McNamara.  
With the test event for the IDBF 2011 Worlds taking place the day before in the Seddon Channel in Tampa, we thought that it would be the perfect location and Sunday, Oct 24th would be a perfect day to launch the start of USDBF Paddling Clinics.  
This half-day clinic will include:
·     Dry land instruction session focusing on technique

·     On-water training session with video-taping

·     Training and racing discussion

·     Video review

·     Q and A and Wrap-Up Discussion

Hi all,

The 2010 USDBF Club Crew National Dragon Boat Championships are just around the corner! Chattanooga is the place to be for quality National dragon boat racing on July 23-25th. We have been busily preparing for the Ultimate National Club Crew Event! This year, Club Crews from all across the US will come to Nationals to race for the title of National Champion in their racing class. An exciting new twist has been added to Nationals this year: the winning crew for each racing class will win a berth for the 2012 IDBF Club Crew World Championships held in Hong Kong. In addition, the Club Crew National Championships will offer a purse pool of $10,000 to the winners of various divisions.

We are honored to host the 2010 BCS National Championships which will award the Dana Nelson Memorial Trophy to the winning BCS crew.

With the focus on club crews, TEAM USA Qualifiers will have a different look this time around. The TEAM USA selection process for adult crews to participate in IDBF World Championships held in Tampa in 2011 will be based on individual time trials held throughout 2010-2011 in each of the regions for all divisions. We hope to be able to offer prospective TEAM USA paddlers an opportunity to do individual time trials on OC1s at Nationals overseen by one or more TEAM USA Coaches. Also. please note that there will be Junior TEAM USA Qualifiers held separately from the NATIONAL CLUB CREW Championships but individual Junior paddlers are welcome to sign up for the time trials on the OC1s. The Junior Divisions in the Nationals Club Crew Championship Races will determine the National Junior Championship Crews for 2010.

We hope you will join us in the 2010 Nationals. This is the year to reclaim the CLUB CREW FOCUS. We look forward to seeing the strongest clubs around the country paddle it out in Chattanooga for the title of National Champion. Those champions will have the opportunity to continue on to represent the USA at the IDBF Club Crew World Championships in Hong Kong in 2012.

Please note: The USDBF will be adhering strictly to the definition of club crew and will not accept any supercrew structures to participate in Club Crew National Championships.

I would like to acknowledge the unbelievable work done by the USDBF Nationals Committee members to make this event a reality. They have volunteered countless hours to put together an event that showcases the amazing paddling skills of club crews across the USA.
